ever since I posted the uncirculated set with the rippled cent ( http://goccf.com/t/314169 ), I have been watching for more of these and I was certainly surprised to actually find a few through ebay and at coin shows.

the first item of note is that all of them are CPZ cents but I don't believe this is zinc rot like we see on the US pennies.

the second item of note is that there seems to be 2 types of this strange surface: orange peel effect and linear striations effect.

third item of note is that these are all from 1997 (first year of CPZ) to 2004.

the effect is also difficult to photograph so please forgive the pic quality. the effect is visible with the naked eye but requires reflecting light to see it well. it also shows up better on the brilliant uncirculated coins and harder to see on the circulated coins.

I have 18 examples if this that I have collected over the past year. here are a few of the best examples:

so what is going on here? does anyone have an explanation for what happened to create this effect?

what would you call this error?

how common is this and is anyone else keeping or searching for these?

any and all comments appreciated. stay safe!

Its not a mint error, most likely caused by acid or heat damage.

No. This is a production flaw, some years are worse than others. It is mildly annoying for those of us chasing higher grades for registry sets. That is why the copper-plated steel coins often will have higher grades (PCGS) than those that are copper-plated zinc. I suspect it is something related to the plating process itself.

SPP... what are you saying no to?

I still want to explore this issue because it is an error and it did occur at the mint and it only affects a certain type of coin. plus it seems they have corrected the issue since I haven't seen any after 2004. that doesn't mean there aren't any after 2004 so if anyone has any of these, please post them. I think the MS examples are cool looking too and I am interested in why some are orange peel and some are lineal.

river4449...if you follow the link in my post, you will see the mint sealed set that I have from 2000 with a 1 cent CPZ with this effect. it is a mint error.

My apologies, I hadn't seen the photo! I assumed it wouldn't be a mint error given that the coins were raw. I haven't quite seen a mint error like that though, how peculiar...
