My bad guys... I replied to the other one but not this one... nobody guessed it. The coin has a little more luster than what the picture shows. I guess the graders were feeling generous that day.

No wonder my job applications to PCGS keep coming back unopened.

Must have originally been sent in in a bulk submission by an auction house.

Never, ever crack that coin out of its plastic tomb.

If there was ever a case of over grading by PCGS, THAT coin takes the cake!

Do auction houses get preferential treatment from the TPG's? What would cause one of the most well respected TPG's in the industry to get this so wrong?

Some say they do, some say they don't, some people screech ad hominem attacks at you for even asking.

So you know... Food for thought.

edit: to offer input to your question of how one of the respected TPGs could get this so wrong, my hypothesis? Market grading.

As you said this coin has a mintage 16,001, a very small mintage, like puny small mintage, like 'the average person swallows more $2.5 gold pieces in their sleep than that' small. And as many of us know, the grading wizards tend to be stricter at grading more common coins, 1880 s Morgan dollars for example.

Now though I don't think it has been said officially yet, but a lot of people find that the vice versa to be true as well, scarcer coins get graded more leniently, I don't know if a coin like this would be considered rare, but I can't imagine these are seen every day at any of the TPGs.

That's my best guess.

I don't know for sure, but I've always had my suspicions. Companies ALWAYS take care of their best customers and will go out of their way to give them preferential treatment. TPG's get most of their revenue from large submitters.

Carelessness, incompetence and/or money.

So curiosity got the best of me and I looked the coin up on PCGS website. This coin was last sold on March 11, 2020 by Stack's Bowers firm. I must have bought it from the buyer.

Wow. Just wow. And I thought PCGS only overgraded Canadian coins by five steps!

It's like evolving... But backwards.

The TrueView seems even more concerning. https://www.PCGS.com/cert/39295384

The scratch under 'states of' I'm surprised didn't detail it, not to mention obvious signs of wear as well. I'm all for non technical parts of grading but there has got to be a limit.

I do still find the coin interesting given the low mintage, and depending on the price paid/owner's opinion it is a nice example, just nowhere near Mint state from what I can see.

Still an interesting example with an interesting story. I could see it grading 53 or 55.

This has been fun...I like posting coins that get this much attention. I paid $375 for this one. I collect $2.5 gold and this one fits well with the others. I'm happy with it and I have learned a lot from this thread. Thanks everyone.
