I picked up a PCGS slabbed WTC recovered brilliant unc, 2001 ASE for $20. Seems like a money grubbing scam by PCGS to me. I could not pass it up for the price. Anyone know much about these?

I know they have been hated by allot of people because they say PCGS profited off of the tragedy and they call them blood coins.

I think Bryan said it all. This is also why you got it at the price you did, they are probably plentiful, and with the stigma attached to them, they have to sell them cheap.I do not know anything about these, except I heard the same "blood coins" name.

Agreed as well. Dirty pool. If they would have donated all of the money, including their time & materials, to a fund for the victims' families, it would have been a home run.

What I have always wondered is what process was used to prove that the bullion coins in question were idea recovered from the World Trade Center.
I know that there were vaults at the World Trade Center where various items were stored. Iron Mountain is reported to have stored bullion and coins for Comex.
From what I can tell that $20 is rather cheap compared to other places.
Would not mind seeing a picture of your coin.

The promotion of these pieces was pretty terrible.
But, you did okay. Good price.

The price you paid for that was very good they usually go much higher. And from your description I would say it is NOT a PCGS slabbed WTC silver eagle. It is a Collectors Universe specimen. The original WTC "Death Coins" were done by Collectors Universe who used PCGS shells (since they owned PCGS) but they have the Collectors Universe logo on the back and they are NOT graded, just listed as Brilliant Uncirculated. It was a few months later before PCGS began slabbing them, and all of the PCGS slabbed coins have a numeric grade.

I'll look for the collectors universe logo, it is not graded. PCGS slab with American flag background.
I could not pass it up for the price, though I have mixed feelings.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I watched a documentary that said there was more bullion in the WTC on that day than bullion in Ft. Knox. I tend to believe it. So these should be plentiful. Not to mention unseemly.
