Hi everyone,

I came across this 1979 nickel with a strange indent on the reverse of the coin. What would this error be called? Also, would it be of any value?

@balakay123, first welcome to CCF. Second, rather than a mint error that looks more like damage to me--the metal looks smeared. Can you please also post a pic of the front of the coin to this thread to confirm?

Ok yes, the flattening on Jefferson's face helps confirm that this is just damage. You will likely get some additional folks weighing in later in the morning.

PMD (Post Mint Damage) also called (more accurately) PSD (Post Strike Damage)

Both are used interchangeably, but you COULD argue that if it fell out of the bag, got run over by a forklift and crunched in the elevator door if it happened at the mint, it's not PMD.
