I am considering buying the coin pictured, but am concerned about the ding on the obverse field by Liberty's shin. How might that affect the market value, and would a third party grading company consider such a coin as 'damaged' because of the ding? I look forward to and appreciate your valued opinions. I would not worry so much about that small divot but the coin is unnaturally white for being 155 years old. I would worry about it getting bodybagged for cleaning, especially if those are the only pictures you have to judge the coin.

I don't know if the slabbers would let that slide, but I certainly would still pay at least 90% of normal for it..

And one by the first star (left side, facing).
But, if from normal circulation, they would slab.

If it hadn't been cleaned, it may have slabbed.

Thanks to all. I seem to have missed the smaller dings mentioned here. Any opinions on how it might grade?

Nice coin, however was it cleaned, it does appear to have a very dull finish(lack luster). I can not tell from the photos, the eyes are not what they use to be.I would and have purchased coins like this, even if it was cleaned(which some hold against the coin)it is a fine piece of history and anacs would grade it anyway.I do not think they would not grade it because of the "dings"!!

It does appear to be cleaned. You will need bigger pics to determine the extent of the cleaning. Surface pitting will be the issue. If the price is right, I would purchase it. I would grade coin AU-50 ( dings) then drop it one grade for the cleaning EF-40 and use that as my benchmark on pricing. Hope this helps a little. Let us know how it turns out. We would also like to see the bigger pics

I would love to provide larger pics, by popular demand, but unfortunately I have none larger to provide. The price on this coin is $359, and is listed as choice AU. I am told that the coin in hand shows lots of luster not apparent from the photos. In lieu of larger pics, I hope this additional info helps. Either way, I appreciate all the feedback and learned opinions.

Well, you have to ask why he is asking for $359 for a coin that trends (in AU) for $600. The seller is well aware of the coin's problems.
Decide if you can live with the problems described above, and that should help to make up your mind. Good luck.

I would look at this sellers other pictures of coins and see how much luster shows in his other pictures and then judge from that on how much luster this coin may have. You can do this by clicking on his feedback score and then if he has sold anything within the last 90 days (I think) all you do is click on the "view item" link beside what the others said about the items they bought

I would steer clear of this one if I were you. Best wishes, Matt
