I recently submitted a few coins to PCGS for grading. 2 came back BB and 4 others received a grade lower than I expected but they were all slabbed so it wasn't a big waste of money!

I sent in one of my best toned Proof Mercury dimes, since I thought it was a no brainer as it was nice dime. I called it "Dr.Pepper" since it reminded me of the can "Dr. Pepper" came in with Carmel/periwinkle transition according to which way you held it in the light. I paid a slight premium because of the toning. It really stood out in my 7070 and I received some nice compliments about it.

So I send it off to PCGS and it came back. It's definitely the same coin I sent in but...I'll let the photos speak for themselves. Any insight or thoughts about my Beautiful Dime now?

It's almost "Blast White" with a hint of it's former toning under the right light!

I think it is still there and that the plastic holding it prevents you from seeing the diffraction colors. It is the same when I look at one of my toned coins under the stereoscope, the toning disappears or lessens a lot.

V-E-R-Y Strange.
But, perhaps Jim is correct, altho I can't see how the plastic could change the color.

I agree. The plastic alters the direction of the light, de-empasizing the toning. Toning shows best with strong side lighting. Even the plastic in a cardboard flip will make a toned coin look dull.

I've cracked out many toned coins from holders and there wasn't that much difference from the toning while slabbed or after cracked out. On this dime, there is about a 75% reduction on the toning and 75% increase in brilliance, almost like it has been dipped or something. Don't get me wrong it's a really beautiful coin in it's present state but it's not what I expected when I got it back. I almost thought I had a switcheroo but it is the same coin.

I seriously doubt that PCGS would alter a coin in any way. Why don't you call them and talk to them about your concerns. If you do let us know what they said.

Hey, at least it made it into plastic and didn't get body bagged for AT.

I can imagine how that conversation would go:
Me: Hey my toned Dime barely has toning after I sent it to you guys to grade.
Them: It's exactly as you sent it to use be happy it didn't get BB
Me: OK.

No, they have been known to dip submitted coins, though usually they ask first. And they deny they they do it.

Conder, surely you are kidding me? They dip submitted coins? How can that be when they are supposed to body bag a dipped coin? If true they will never receive another coin from me. Nelrak, I am sorry that your coin looks different. I was trying to suggest something to help, but you are probably right it would be useless. My condolances.

I guess it's dip it and get slabbed or not get dipped and get BB. It kind of ruined my experience with submitting if they aren't going to be the way I want to have it preserved.

They slab dipped coins all the time, so does NGC. Why do you think that there are so many 100+ year old white coins residing in slabs? The difference is whether someone does a good job of dipping with no leftover evidence other than lustrous untoned surfaces(slabbed) or someone does a bad job, leaving dip residue on the coin and stripping off the luster(bodybag). The problem is too few people have actually mastered the skills necessary to properly dip a coin without being detrimental, most just wind up ruining the coins they attempt I cannot really comment on why a grader would dip or how often they do it to submissions(I have no clue) but it is a dirty little "secret" that they do it.

BTW Nelrak, I prefer the original look of your coin

What a travesty, it looked better originally. I'd post this thread on the PCGS and NGC boards. Yes, PCGS does dip coins, but I thought they would ask first.

Just because it is more attractive!
(well, to some of us anyway. Many others prefer white.
I love that color.)
