Shouldn't there be some trace of the underlying S within the D mintmark?

I'm certainly not the expert here, but it looks like some serious hits is all. In essence, damage. What in the corners of the D I don't know, maybe some die chips or something of that nature. But of course, wait for the experts.

I'm looking at the 9 and both fours. I'm looking at the D and I'm looking at a slightly depressed rim. All indicate damage of some sort. It does not appear to be a Repunched mintmark or an Over mintmark.

You always have to look at the questioned spot in the context of what is going on around it. You can have something good on a damaged coin, so don't get me wrong. It is the overall appearance on this coin , plus the fact that the D took a hit or two that leads to my conclusion.

Thanks,
Bill

It's not an OMM or an RPM. Just damage is all I see.
