Found this 1983 cent with double diebreaks evident on the memorial corners . But what caused the cent to turn grey in the middle.

@MA, I do see those die cracks at the lower corners of the Lincoln Memorial. As to the surface discoloration on the rev, it is anyone's guess as to what exactly it is. However, it didn't happen at the mint.

Surface damage is environmental. Need close-ups of memorial ends. Could be minor die crack/cud.

I'm guessing a cigarette lighter torched it, probably in a bar while they were waiting for their food and drink.
