A friend sent me this Franklin half the other day.
In hand, it's a very nice coin that seems reasonably well-struck,
although I don't think it's FBL. Check out the hit of another coin's edge on the bell.
The milled edges of this one are very clean. Thoughts on grade?

This is a very nice coin, in my opinion mint state, I would say BEN would grade probably MS 63 . I WOULD ALSO SAY IT DOES LOOK LIKE THE COIN WAS STRUCK NICELY.I would like to know if you know if it was or is a proof coin?

KurtS,

You are correct, it is not FBL but has an amazing strike for a circulation coin. I always pay particular attention to the detail in the eagle's wings on the reverse. This one has depth and detail. It started as a 65 or even 66 but the contact marks (numerous) will bring it down to earth around 63 or possible 64.

Looks like an "average uncirculated" coin. With the various ticks, scuffs, and the hit and the reeding mark on the bell I'd call it MS-62. The strike does look somewhat above average but the bell lines are incomplete, so no FBL.

San Francisco did not routinely start making proofs until 1968. All 1954-S Franklin half dollars are business strikes.

It would be MS-63 if not for the marks on the bell, I'll say MS-62 also.

Thanks for your grading opinion I'll say MS63 because most of the "marks" in the fields are luster scuffs--this Nikkor lens sees everything. SeatedNut--I had the same thoughts about the eagle wing detail, and Franklin's face shows a little more detail than average.
