Was this coin submitted to post mint damage? It's quite odd. Not sure why someone would do this to a coin though.

Probably trying to buy a soda (which was a dime then) for a cent that they altered. But probably didn't work as the mec on the machine would reject it as it would be too thick to be a dime. Thus the alteration of cents with acid to reduced width and height.
