I did show this coin a few years back however I believe I'm able to take better pictures now with a newer camera.
With time on hand and updating some photo's of my 1859's I came across some information not presently on Haxby's site
The first picture is to show more or less the actual colour, the rest were taken with a flash to show more detail.
I noticed that there's no reference to the "5" in the Date being doubled on Dr. Haxby's site but it shows up quite well on this coin.
This is a very early die state as state 2 for the obverse has a die crack at the "I" in REGINA and another at the "N" in Canada.
As can be seen on this coin there's no die crack in Regina however the die crack to to the "N" in Canada is present but in an early state so it falls into state 1.5.
I know these are minor issues but thought the early die state showing a R/P five may be interesting enough to be added.
Also if you could be so kind as to express your opinion on the grade, keeping in mind the old cleaning? It would be appreciated.

Cheers, Bill

That's a nice type 1 and mine had the R/P'd 5 (minor) before I let someone else have it. Mine was the first one ever cert'd by ICCS .. Bill Cross had it done for me, which is why it got into the Charlton.

The 9/6 type 2 has a much more pronounced and well offset doubling of the 5. Your posts are starting to rekindle a spark that hasn't been there for 3-4 years. Nice VF-30+ and would be maybe XF if not for the cleaning and discolorations.

I can see the re-punching on the 5 in your photos. This is a case where a higher grade coin with some cleaning shows details that easily get hidden by wear and/or dirt on the surface of the coin. I will check some other I7 reverses to see if we can update the date photo on that page to show the re-punching on the 5.

I have always been surprised to see how much re-punching shows up on AU and mint state coins that disappears with just a little more wear. Some of the dies where we only have a lower grade example will show some nice re-punching when a higher grade example turns up. One of my favorites is the reverse die I3x which has a major repunch on the ball of the 9 and two small horns on the top of the 9. Here is a photo of the only example we know of. I would love to see what a higher grade example of this one looks like.

Phil ... I have a number of the 'horned" 9's, some in very nice condition. I'll send you one, but am unsure if it/they will be "13x" like you state above. I have always used names and/or "types" to describe my '59's. As you know, I don't use the Haxby numbers .. that's Greek to me.

Thanks Bill! That would be great. There are several other 1859 reverses which might also be called "horned" 9's. The I3x will have the wide vine break at leaf 2 like the I7 (9/6 T1) that Hounddog Bill showed above. All of the Haxby group I reverses have that vine break.

A quick look at one of the albums showed that I had 6 "horned" '59's .. one of them has one of the "horns" as the start of a D/C that looks like it goes to the left foot serif of the T in Cent. One of the "horns" looks like it comes off at a teeny less angle from the others.

And one the the "horns" that I have is a much later die state than the others, with the D/C at 6 huge and traveling wide through 6, thru 7 and out the stem, almost making a huge Cud there at 6-7.

Bill, is this one like the last one you mentioned?
