I found a 2006 5C that is supposed to be composed of 95% steel. Its weight is 4.58 grams. It is non-magnetic. Is this an error, or unlisted variety?

Just a regular old nickle. 2006 was a transition year from copper-nickel to plated steel. Look for a "P" composition mark under the Queen, indicating a plated steel coin. Yours is 75% copper, non-magnetic.

I had looked it up in Coinsandcanada. They don't give mintage figures for the 5C without P or RCM. They list both of those coins as magnetic. Is there a better source to get mintage information? I would think this coins mintage should be lower based on figures for the other two listed varieties. 5 cents 2006 - P : 94,226,000,
5 cents 2006 - RCM Logo : 45,082,000

CoinsandCanada is not the font of knowledge concerning mintages and/or specs. You have 43 million cupro-nickel, 94 million multiplated steel with P mark, and another 45 million multiplated steel with no P mark. Just purchase any Charlton or other annual Canadian guide rather than looking for a small section of a website.

purchase any Charlton

Good advice, assuming you are interested in Canadian coins. An edition a couple of years old is cheap and well worth 20 bucks or so. But know, there is 2 of them. Circulated and NCLT editions each year. Haxby has 1 with both and paper currency as well.

I am only beginning to collect Canadian. I must say Canada has cornered the market on producing high quality coins. It will be well worth the investment. Thank you.

I wouldn't say that Canada has the market cornered on quality coins .. the RCM pushes heaven-knows how many ugly designs out the door at greatly inflated prices. Their circulation coins are OK, but once they start getting into the fancy-smancy colors, illogical designs, and weird drawings, you can leave me out. The RCM puts out way way too much stuff that I think hurts numismatics ... they like to put out grandma bait.
