Hello,

I don't know a lot about coins, but my mother-in-law just gave us a box of old coins and we've been enjoying researching them.

In the box we found a:
Front verbiage: 1819 FERDIN VII DEI GRATIA
Back verbiage: HISPAN ET TND REX 8R J J

I found the coin online, but this particular coin has what looks like a stamp on the front and I can't find a reference anywhere online to something like this. Thoughts? Do you think it was something from production or something from after production?

Thank you in advance for your help!
~Angela

@r11, that looks like a counterstamp (which would have been added after the coin was minted, perhaps as part of a devaluation process).

Added: I'm going to move your thread over to our world coin section as there are a couple folks there who know a whole lot about these.

Mexico 1819 8 Reales coin, counterstamped around 1834 for use in Portugal as 870 reis.

There are fakes of this type of stamp that get applied to 8R coins in modern times... this doesn't jump out as one, but something to be aware of.

Thank you, both! That makes perfect sense. I wondered if it was something like that because the stamp itself is so clear compared to the rest of the coin.

Great coin with a lot of history behind it. This one has been hanging out in my collection for almost 40 years.
