This coin been on ebay for at least two years - asking price is $1,700. I was initially interested because I love the 1858 20 cent. But I was dissuaded by a colleague who knows better. And now that I've picked up some more knowledge myself, I tend to agree that something is not right here. Curious to hear what the rest of you think?

It looks like it is in an ICCS holder . I would contact the ebay seller for more Pix . Especially a couple showing the entire holder to you w/ certificate number . Would certainly help with a decision .

It's actually ungraded. I've talked to the guy who wants to sell it at some length. He says he's had it for years - kept in a dark, safe place and only taken out on rare occasions. Might be true? It's hard to tell. If it's legit then the price is not crazy - mint state 1858 20 cent coins go for over $1,000 - often more than $2,000. But it looks like it was minted two weeks ago. Just seems hard to believe. There are very few coins that age that aren't toned in some way. The expert I spoke to previously suggested the possibility that it's fake. I've stared at it side by side with pictures of legit 1858s and can't see any tell-tale details that are amiss. But still....

The die crack on the reverse should be able to tell you if it's a known counterfeit or not. Did you ask him why he hasn't had it graded?
Cheers, Bill

He doesn't believe in grading...said that his experience is that he never gets the grade he thinks he should [among other things that were more reasonable]. it's actually one of the things he said that made me nervous. I don't totally believe in grading either* though I would restrict that remark to things further down the food chain. If I owned something like this I would have it packed off to my TPG of choice in a new york minute. *not intended to launch another debate on PCGS vs ICCS vs etc....etc... !

I am, by no means, an expert on Vicky silver, but it also doesn't seem right to me. Although Vicky doesn't really have crow's feet on other 20 cent pieces, there seems to be more tiny folds or creases on other high grade 20 cent pieces. This one just looks too clean. Also, on other 20 cent pieces, there is a crease/fold where the jowl line meets the neck itself. This one doesn't have it .. it's as smooth as a baby's bottom, just like the whole rest of the coin. If there was any way to send the coin to Sandy Campbell for an opinion, that would be the clincher.

If you want it, offer to pay to have it graded if it's comes back genuine and not details you'll buy if it doesn't you only lose the grading fee.

Some excellent suggestions. I've met Sandy but don't have any sort of professional relationship with him - have never bought anything from him aside form the Cornerstone collection catalogue [which is awe-inspiring btw].
Grading at PCGS runs to $65 or something right?
I like the comparison idea - I'll down load a couple of mugshots of other, more clearly legit coins and get back to you.

Best advice is PASS ! In the current coin market you will be able to buy a very decent Certified coin at a reasonable price . Just send your want list to a few top dealers they Should be able to help . I am puzzled as the coin looks like it is in a sealed inner part of an ICCS holder . Needs way better pix!

That's not an uncirculated coin. It's an AU details coin worth less than $400. You can see wear on the braid and laurel leaves on the obverse and on the orb and knot on the reverse. It's been treated to a polish with Silvo or some similar product and then photographed thru plastic to kill the shine. 153889489880

Too bad you couldn't weigh it,or measure diameter or thickness to compare with a known sample. H50

@Huck50 EXACTLY! That's why the idea of not getting this coin graded is so suspicious. Who would pay that sort of $$ for something they couldn't assess for possible forgery?

A lot of this seller's other coins are graded, so why not this one.
Hmmm?
