Hi all. Dug my 3rd Draped Bust LC of the year last week but this one's a fairly rare 1796 S-118. It's in poor condition I admit (especially the obverse), but enough details remain to identify it as such with the "6" touching the drapery on the obverse and the left berry nearly parallel to the "D" in United on the reverse. So my question to you - is this coin worth getting graded? In a sense I realize any coin grading service will likely not "grade" a specimen with this much corrosion, but at least would list this as genuine, correct? Thanks for any insight and best regards.

John

It all depends on what you want to do next with this coin.

If your goal is to sell it, then I believe that you can sell it without evaluating it. You co-exist money and time

Super find. Not worth getting graded imo. Certainly worth having, and any collector would be happy to have it.

Not worth the cost to grade, imo.

This coin would be easily marketable to a early date specialist or specialist dealer raw or slabbed as the attribution is obvious. I don't think authenticity is a problem. So then the only question is "Is important is it to you that it be in a slab holder with the variety listed on it?" If it is I would see which service would list it so without charging extra since it will be a details coin from all of them and the people interested in it for the variety aren't going to care what company slabbed it. (And I would list the variety on the invoice especially if you send it to PCGS or NGC to make sure they get it right as they are the most likely to get it wrong.)

And Coinfrog, the value of this coin is definitely high enough to justify slabbing if you wanted it slabbed.

Great find, congratulations!

I wonder if professional conservation would be a good investment. If NCS (for example) could improve the eye appeal and stabilize the surfaces to preclude ongoing corrosion it might be worth a shot. I however have no knowledge about whether corroded copper coins are reasonable candidates for such conservation.

Anybody have any relevant experience they can share?
