Hey everyone. I'm very new to collecting coins and was wondering if anyone has seen this before or know what it is. It looks like a D punched in the jacket to me. Any thoughts?

Interesting for sure.
Can you post full obverse and reverse images?
As well as more closeups from different angles since other things might give a similar effect.

ps. Try soaking in pure acetone, not nail polish though, for a few seconds to see if it is something stuck to the surface (like glue or sugar water from a soda). If it is just something on the surface the acetone should remove it.

Possibly a bag mark with a small "crater" effect around it?

to Community,

It is a contact mark, you can see the scrape marks to the center and the metal been pushed outward, it is considered a damage.

I didn't have any Acetone on hand, but here are some better pictures if that helps.

Thanks again

to the CCF!

Wow! It's hard to call this one. The raised ridges around the depression should indicate damage, but I'm just not sure. I'll be following this post to see what the other members have to say.

Until then I'll be having some popcorn with GMS5. Could you pass the salt?

Just a contact mark. Note the areas that look like they are raising? That is what I call a wave. A hit in the center causes the metal to wave away from the incuse mark on the coin. You can see the distortion more on the third form the last image. Note how the metal looks more distorted because if wasn't taken at the same angle the other images was. Just coin damage on that area.

Images sure can be tricky.
IMHO, this one is interesting enough that I would send it off to one or more of the attribution services for confirmation one way or the other.

(This is one of those times I wish I knew how to do overlays to compare to an actual D MM.)

Another question. Would this coin also be considered a doubled die? (Specifically looking at the kind of halo around the date) Or is that a die wearing? I've seen a lot of coins with that little edge around the outside of the lettering that kind of makes it look doubled. Any good way to really tell the difference?

Not a DDO from what I can tell. I'm pretty sure the "halo" effect you are talking about is from Die Deterioration.
