hello coin community. Could someone give me some insight on this quarter? When I first found it I immediately knew it was different. At an angle it looks really black in color but when its viewed with light flashing in it its shiny rainbow colored mostly gold. Also the surface wear (if that is what it is) is extremely strange. It appears wore at different angles not smooth as you would expect. The chest of the eagle is the best example of this. The (worn) angles are what shines as gold areas however there are blueish and green areas. These photos were taken with an iphone 4 and no colors were added. The entire reverse is very shiny with no scratches. The obverse isn't shiny but has typical worn areas as you woulld expect to see, Nothing like the reverse, but also has very light gold toning. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is there a page or photos of others I can use as a reference? Thank you.

These were taken with another phone. I cant get an entire side of the coin without losing resolution (focus) but this is what I have. The coin weighs 5.5g but thats expected since so much surface is missing. question: How could the reverse wear into a three sided pyramid on the eagles chest coming to a point in the center. strange

@davere, sorry but this all looks to me like normal circulation wear, although I agree that the eagle's chest has taken a beating. The gold toning could be from chemical/environmental exposure or even a science experiment where someone gold-plated this coin.

Sorry about that everyone. It was the lighting that made it look bright gold in color. Here are some better pics. This quarter had a lot of gold toning but after taking a hundred or so close up photos the gold tone is almost completely gone. Also why does this edge have a pink ring that peels and moves around like it was painted on. weight is 5.6 but with the missing (wear) metal it should be underweight. Here it is. I believe it is silver and that the apparent wear on the reverse was caused by a single event. The missing metal was mashed. I say this because there arent any rounded edges on the interior devices. They are flat and come together creating a sharp edge. There is still a lot of toning (green, blueish) however the gold is almost gone due to being touched and humidity. Any input about this coin would be greatly appreciated. I believe I found another date just to the right of the normal one. Could be another trick of the light though. Ill let everyone know the results of the metallurgy test as soon as I get them.

Looks like something spilled on it or as mentioned earlier..environmental damage. I have seen some weird stuff on coins. Some I was afraid to even touch.

I should also state again that the reverse is very, VERY shiney as if what ever caused the flattened areas on the reverse was done with extreme pressure. Any thoughts?

It may have been a well used gaming coin or just had a lot of circulation damage. The colors do look like environmental or chemical exposure on the coin as noted above.
