Bob and others;

This was a normal lot of 32 coins from Roma Numismatics I just picked up. Most are Seleucid Apollo, Prow's, Lion Looking back etc in the lot. But this 14 mm coin is 1.79 grams, an extremely pronounced set of hands clasping, but the back is completely smooth. Too light to be Paestum or Phrygia. Is it obvious Bob? Or perhaps a box decoration? Forgive me if this is obvious.

I'm thinking maybe Roman Republic, based on the style of the hands. Might be too small though.

Evening, Joe.

Clearly not a coin. If ancient, I suspect it might fall into the general category of bronze appliques.

Bob, I learned something new. What were these used for? Like on a broach or pin of some type?

TC, "applique" is a general term that dealers use for decorative metal fittings/trinkets - used for containers, doors, horse bridles, bronze drinking vessels, armor, etc. There wasn't one specific usage...if you do an image search on a term like "Roman applique" you'll probably see all sorts.

@lks, you should know better than to directly challenge @bobL's sleuthing skills. The dude is simply unstoppable.

Spence,

Bob's first link was dead on for this. Amazing and you are correct Bob is that good so even though I am sure he is quarantined from college teaching right now, he has not slacked off a bit, sharp as ever!
