TC, "applique" is a general term that dealers use for decorative metal fittings/trinkets - used for containers, doors, horse bridles, bronze drinking vessels, armor, etc. There wasn't one specific usage...if you do an image search on a term like "Roman applique" you'll probably see all sorts.
