Something is going on, that's for sure! Lamination? De-lamination? Struck thru? Maybe one of each.

...and the reverse?

Struck through retained debris? Or it just could be some adhesive stuck on your coin?

I think it's struck through lots of grease on this side. I thought that from the first image and then when I hit the missing digit in the date, it told the story. Even if it was a lamination the image of the number would show under the surface.

As USSID18 says, would you post an image of the reverse?

Cool coin. I'd toss it in a 2x2--after a good soak in acetone. Would like to see the reverse.

Start with weight first. Over 3.11, Then something was added to the coin. Less, something came of the coin. Normal, then struck through something on the coin. I'm guessing 1942 for date. Check to see if that mintmark is a match for that year?

I agree that the coin could use a long soak in acetone first, but does appear to be a tapered planchet.
