a coin I was given years ago by my dad. I don't know much about classic US coins, especially precious metal coins. Is this worth sending off for grading?

Any Half-Eagle is worth having professional Grading. And this is a nice one!

Ordinarily I'd say no, but since this is clearly important to you, perhaps "dressing it up" in a TPG holder is something to think about.

Important to me, but the holder really isn't, coinfrog. Although seeing two different answers here and not sure which one to go with...

Well, there really is no "right" answer, especially in the case of a common date coin like this where authenticity or rarity are not issues.

I see grading as a benefit if there are questions of authenticity, or whether there is doubt about the grade and a small difference in grade means a huge change in value.

Neither applies in this case.

You are going to have to pay $20-40 to have a third party assign a grade and put it in a nice plastic slab. You can get a hard plastic holder for less than a dollar if there are concerns about protecting it.

Take a look at some of the slabbed coins for sale on ebay if you want an idea of what the final product would look like. Then decide if that is worth the cost.

Thanks Oriole! That makes a lot of sense.

I don't think that you would ever sell it. I would not. I think that a hard plastic holder with a well-made label would be excellent for protection and display.

AU-58 for a grade. As Oriole and Frog mentioned, only worth paying for the slabbing if authenticity is in question.
