Found this while going through some old pennies. Bottom of the last 1 in the
Date is missing. Also appears that the 9 in the date also got defected? Any opinions
On this? I'm not sure what to make of this I have no previous coin expertise. Is this a common error? Thanks for any insight any of you may have

The defect on the 9 could definitely be a PMD but I'm 99% sure the error on the 1 is from the mint. I can't see how the whole bottom of the 1 could be removed without and evidence of damage around it. I can try and upload more pics.

What you are seeing is damage, John1 is correct. The "1" has taken a hit and the bulge of metal you see is actually the metal from the "1" being pushed from the bottom to the top from damage, you can see the flow of the damage as well. This did not leave the mint this way, given the condition and all the nicks and dings on the rest of the date it is clear this is PMD.
