Hi all, I'm a novice when it comes to US Colonial Coinage. Need some advice from people with more experience.

Picked this up recently, it's definitely cleaned / rubbed. Weight is 12.4g and is not attracted to a magnet.

The edge reeding however looks kinda shallow and dodgy. Is it fake ? Any opinions will be much appreciated.

Looks okay maybe some slight edge corrosion from being in salt water or something but at a casual glance I don't see anything wrong with it.

I don't like it. Rough grainy surfaces yet with a polished look to it. And for a coin with the detail this one has showing you are right that edge looks pathetic.

Tried looking it up in Buggert's book on Seated halves and it does appear to match WB-2 so if it is a fake they used the right obv and rev for the model.

But I'm still suspicious.

Prior to buying the coin I tried to find pictures online for the edge reeding but not surprisingly I could not. And this issue doesn't just affect colonial coins, if you try to search for edge reeding for most coins it is very hard to come by.

This I feel is strange considering that many veteran collectors have told me the edge is vital in determining a coin's authenticity. And many forgers still get the edge wrong.

I compared this 1869 edge to my 1853 one and they look vastly different. Are edges for half dollars vastly different depending on year struck ?

Perhaps another explanation could be someone in the past filed the edges for the silver shavings ?

Different years or mints may have differing numbers of reeds, but the form and clarity of the reeds should be pretty much the same. In your last picture on the genuine the reeds are wide and the "valleys" between them are narrow. On the questionable coin the reeds are narrow and the valleys are wide.

Could it be Die Deterioration or filing of the rim?
