While it's not anything earthshaking or wonderfully rare, I was taken by the depiction of the winged Victory on the reverse of this Valens SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE AE-3 from Antioch.

While Victory is normally depicted with her right arm raised high, holding a wreath, with the left wing showing and with a small spot over her right shoulder depicting a hint at the right wing (?), on this coin she holds the interestingly designed wreath low, down around her waist, and it does appear that her right wing is also depicted, feathers and all.

I checked VCoins and only found one other coin somewhat similar to this; a SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE of Valentinian II.

The first and second photos are of my coin. The third depicts the "normal" reverse and the fourth is the Valentinian II from VCoins.

It is fun to see how individual celators used their artistic skills in different ways.

Interesting observation Paul, nothing wrong with a bit of flyspecking
I will check my trays shortly and post if I find anything.

iulius,

Thank you for the interesting article.

Since the right side of the obverse legend is partially struck off the flange, it is hard to tell if it is the usual P F AVG or if there is a chance it might be PER F AVG.

I'll check into this some more. There is always something new to investigate when it comes to ancient coins.

Hello Paul. I think that yours is the regular obverse legend based on how many letters are in each legend and I only know of this rare obverse legend type turning up with the field marks Θ over Φ / Κ; which RIC does not even list for Valens; though these marks are listed for Gratian in the fourth period. So this issue seems to have been struck near the death of Valens in A.D. 378 and only from one workshop, so perhaps merely a mistake (until other workshops appear).

below is an example I sold about 2 years ago

Victor,

That was my thought, too, since it doesn't have the reverse field letters.
