Or a coin gouge. Is there any gray showing on the ear?

I don't think so, difficult to tell with the beautiful toning. But no, I don't see grey popping out at me.

Note on your last image, if you rotate the are in question, 180 degrees,, it would fit into that area. It looks like to me, it is moved metal. Possibly still attached?

Oh how interesting yes I can see that as a possibility.

So should I take this as a die gouge, or just PMD?

Look to see if you can see under it? It so, then it is coin damage. But you might want to save it as an education piece to show to a new collector?

Thank you Coop, nope I can't see under it. However there is some zinc rot by the looks of it to the south-east of the gouge. Not for sure if that is relevant in anyway.
