Plated with zinc. Lots of schools do this in chemistry class.

Chrome plated copper cent. Just a face value coin. After the surface if altered, the premium goes out of window to a hard core coin collector. Note the first clue that this was not sold by a collector? (Denomination on the 2X2. The U.S. Mint never struck a penny. Read the reverse.

Nickel plated. Pure nickel is highly magnetic but the plating is thin so there isn't enough nickel there to make the coin act like steel (it will stick to a magnet but it won't JUMP to the magnet.) Chromium is not magnetic, but is commonly plated over a nickel plating.
