Hey everyone ! I'm new here and also pretty new to coin hunting/collecting. I found this very odd 1936 wheat back that seems to be made of something else. Its not steel as its not magnetic and not the correct year. But what is it ? considering its supposed to be 95% copper I don't see how it can be this silverish color. Or if someone somehow made it this way.
Plating is when you use electrolysis to coat a metal in a thin layer of another metal. A lot of these coins were made as part of school science projects.
Very likely the coin was cleaned a while back. Depending on the 'chemicals/substances' used, the copper can react in an interesting array of colors--pale copper pink, pale brassy yellow, etc. Google search for images of cleaned copper coins.
