Its sad

I haven't been here in over a month. BUT I have good news, I recently picked up 2 missing fractionals..

Expected delivery tomorrow, but that could be a few days from now. I tried to stay away, but a good price came up.

Both came in, but you only get one.

First up is FR 1283 which is the 25 cents from the 2nd issue. This note has no small surcharges on the corners of the backs, all other FR numbers have surcharges. The surcharges were added as a way to reduce the incidences of counterfeiting. The 2nd issue were released from Oct 10, 1863 to February 23, 1867. All have the same front, while the backs have different colors based on demonination, the colors are:
>5 Cents - Brown
>10 Cents - Light to Dark Green
>25 Cents - Light to Dark Purple
>50 Cents - Light to Dark Red

The bronze oval on the front was a way to counterfeiting also as the cameras of the time could only take black and white pictures. The oval is also printed first so the printing is on top of the oval. The dock scene on the front was engraved by James Duthie from the currency bureau and was used on all 2nd issue.

Today's note is FR 1379 which is the 4th issue 50 cents with Samuel Dexter. You ask who is Samuel Dexter?

Samuel Dexter lived from May 14, 1761 to May 4, 1816. At sixteen he was admitted to Harvard college and graduated in 1781. He was a Massachusetts congressman from 1793 to 1795. On March 4, 1799 he became the senator from Massachusetts. In 1800 he was asked to be the secretary of war for President John Adams, and then 6 months later became the Secretary of treasury. A post he only held for 3 months as Jefferson succeeded Adams as president. He ran for governor of Massachusetts in 1816, but didn't win and passed away from Scarlet Fever a few months afterward. Pretty eventful life.

Now onto the note, I've been looking for one of these for a while and many are in pretty sorry shape or expensive. A few months ago I was talking to Vern Potter and he told me was a getting a few and just to hold on. Well Vern got more than a few. I picked this one as the price was right and it looked really nice. It does have a pinhole.

Now onto pinholes and fractional currency.... the reason many fractional note have pinholes is that they were pinned together in bundles after cutting. There was no automated bundling machine in the 1870's, so after being cut, a group was pinned together. Even many MS notes will have pinholes.

Thanks for looking and while I still have 4 notes on my list, I do need to get back to the virtual 7070.

The 4 currently on my list are:

2nd Issue 50 cent
3rd issue Justice 50 cent
4th issue Lincoln 50 cents

A colonial/continental note

And currently not actively looking but would like a Federal Reserve Bank Note $100

Vern Potter is one of the tightest graders in the business and also just happens to be a nice guy. I've bought a fair number of notes from him and have never been disappointed. He is also one of the few dealers who doesn't haggle much. Price is posted, take it or leave it. I like that!
