The thing is, which is worth more. RPM collectors don't care to pay extra for an error. And an error collector won't pay more for a variety. So they mean two different things to two different types of collectors. So you have two directions, but neither will pay for a double event on a coin. (Variety VS error)

Are the two typically separate, coop? Seems to me like a lot of people who are interested in one are interested in both

As different as dimes and nickels. The only ones who think they found a bonus is the searchers. If someone is really into collecting for a collection to sell in the future, is the ones who buy the best example for their collections. Any defect will turn them away, as they want problem free coins at the best price. To them it's quality not quantity. Also if a coin is graded, price is the factor. Knowing what to look for, finding the best die state, looking for higher grade coins that are sold raw. If the value increases, which will increase more? A poor grade/condition/finger printed coin, or a quality coin? As you get older as a collector you finally realize what to keep. (And what not to keep) how do you do that? Buy a high dollar coin, have it for years and when you go to sell, see if you made a profit, or just almost break even. So looking for the right coins in more important than finding a bunch of coins that you might break even with? Just helping new collectors to set their goals, early in their travels on coin collecting. At first I collected everything. Then ran into a variety collector, and sold what I no longer collected and moved on to my serious collections. So I got some of both now. When I'm gone, they will probably end up in a Coin Star machine and someone else will find them. So plan ahead.

While I agree with Coop here, that folks want an error coin or a variety coin and multiple issues do not increase value and can decrease it, I actually do find it interesting to have a variety on an error. Nope, won't pay more for it, but will add it to my collection when found.
