I was going to put this in my discard pile until I noticed the mint mark in a hole. Please help determine if this an error or just damaged.

to CCF. It is called zinc rot not an error. More info can be found using the search box upper left of page.

Thanks for the input. I knew it was damaged. I just don't understand how a hole for the mint mark got there and the other letters got covered.

@max, the underlying zinc core has started to deteriorate. In some places, it is bubbling up and at the mintmark, it has started to collapse. Once the protective copper plate has been violated, the reactive zinc is exposed to the environment.

Many of the 80's cents shows split plating on the mintmarks. Common then. So the other damage came later, because we see the zinc rot is stronger on that area. The rest of the damage probably happened in a parking lot to the coin.
