To my knowledge they never came in plastic boxes.

No if they had been issued, they would've been in the flat packs like the mint and proof sets

I don't ever recall the Mint putting out any sets in snap shut cases like this.
Most likely what you have is an aftermarket set of some sort.

I think perhaps what he means, is the 64 SMS coins technically were not issued from the mint. However, perhaps a couple dozen sets or so do exist. But a lot of information on them is just speculative. As far as how they originally were- I believe they all were in sets at one point. Some say in non-discript hard plastic cases and I believe possibly in the official blue mint cases like you would see for the year 66 and 67. It's been said that perhaps they were actually made in the following year of 65. But again, more questions and speculation than confirmed facts.

That picture is actually from a complete set sold by Heritage a couple of years ago. It actually sold for $151,000.

Here's the thing, there are certain die markers on the half. Most know about the "dangling 4" on obverse but there are other markers as well. Like on the reverse, one being from the F in OF AMERICA to the A. These marks have been seen on all examples (except the dangling 4 on only one example). The few Kennedys on PCGS have very clear images of this. The other coins in the set also have some possible diagnostic marks. So, look these up and then inspect your coin and you should have your answer.

The OP set is NOT a SMS, it is also NOT a 1964 Mint set (there is a chance it is HALF of a mint set but even if it is, now that it has been broken out of the government packaging, it is pretty much just worth melt.
