The future doesn't have to be as bleak as we may think .
Years ago I had a bricks and mortar coin shop ( 1985 to 1997 )
The evolution I witnessed then was amazing . Started out great retail
for the first 3 years or so . Then mint bullion and bars came along.
Around the end of the 1980s , the coin market came to a grinding halt .
So all the shops evolved into selling sports cards which became 80 per cent
of our business . We also started buying scrap gold and silver in the shop ,
something unthinkable just a few years earlier .
After the sports card craze ended , we noticed the coin market remained poor
except there were now people buying quality and using coins as an alternative place to put money .
Then came the Internet craze and the end of the 1990s was the beginning of the bricks and mortars
closing . Virtually the only reason anyone would have a shop today is for the ability to BUY .
I have to agree with some of the above posters who state that we may see the demise of both
Shops and Coin shows . Today selling online is second nature to many ( us included ) and
ebay ,
Etsy , ones own website and other platforms are the new and safe way to buy coins .
