Hello CCF, I would love to hear your thoughts on the grade of this coin, as well as any observations as to how its interesting surface texture came to be. My first inclinations are to say prior cleaning or environmental damage, but let me know what you think!

Assuming it's genuine, looks acid-treated. Can you give us the weight?

It weighs 5.0 grams on my scale. I'm confident in its accuracy, since I've weighed out a $5 half eagle as well as a $2.5 quarter eagle and other various coins/bars, and they all were represented accurately.

Full weight is 5.015g, which suggests a slight weight loss here due to apparent acid treatment. But I have little experience in this area - I'll wait for the experts to chip in.

with Coinfrog.

A very likely theory would suggest that severe acid attack has leached the 10% copper out of the surface. What remains in the surface is close to 100% gold.
I would think that XRF testing would reveal gold in the surface at around 98%.

Gold does not pit like this in the ground or under the sea. So it is not environmental damage. Ancient coins are dug up all the time looking like new.
This coin needs to be tested to see if it actually is gold. If so, like Frog said probably dropped in acid for what ever reason.
