Quote: .but sadly very illegal in Canada. you sure about this? I know a well known coin store close to me that has alot of these for sale I think although it maybe illegal I dont think anyone has ever been convicted in canada for defacing money,,the banks do it all the time when they write/stamp the top bill in a stack with that being said I have made a few myself but I do the more tedious method which keeps the obverse and reverse on the inside of the ring here is a step by step of my last ring I made from a 1966 dollar http://goccf.com/t/234774&SearchTerms=wreck

While it is illegal in Canada to deface currency, Who's going to police coin jewelry? Nobody I say. Enjoy the beautiful ring(s) and carry on.

While the government may not allow defacing currency they certainly are champions of debasing it. Enjoy the ring!

Those are very nice. I'm about to check out gidjit's link. Correct me if I'm wrong. Once a coin becomes your possession, it is yours to do as you please, so long as it never see's circulation again.

I can't say for sure about Canada, but in the states it is only illegal if you are intending it for fraudulent purposes.
cool ring, I have bought a few myself but always found them to be tapered (after being formed around a tapered mandrel) and didn't fit well
last week on you-tube I watched a guy (with about $1500 worth of jewelers equipment - he sells the kits) crank these out in under 4 minutes, perfectly formed. granted he's a pro, does this for a living, and has the tools of the trade, but wow...

There are ads all over facebook for rings and ring making tools....only problem....they are from China and the coins have no silver

Interesting! I have a small collection (~6 pieces so far) of 1858 20 cent pieces that have been turned into love tokens. Two still have the home-made pins on the backing. They're interesting - usually initials or something printed on the obverse - completely obscured as a result. The reverse, in contrast, is usually quite well preserved excepting the marks from whatever pin or other device was used as fastener.
They're generally not appreciated in numismatic terms - dealers will turn away. But there's a small community within the small community of coin enthusiasts who love these things!
