Hi all,

Unfortunately, the board of the RCNA has had to cancel the RCNA Convention. The press release is as follows:

PRESS RELEASE - Royal Canadian Numismatic Association

Toronto, Ontario, May 20: As we all are intimately aware, the world is confronting the greatest health crisis of our generation, and most likely of the last century. Our thoughts are with each of you in our collector society, your families, your clubs and their members, and your broader communities. We wish each of you the best, and an optimistic hope that this will pass safely for all of us in due course.
It is with sadness that we must announce that The Royal Canadian Numismatic Association's 2020 annual convention, planned for July in Halifax, has been cancelled. We must look first to the health and safety of our collector family, and it does not appear to us that we can hold our 2020 convention in July and uphold that obligation, which has to remain our foremost consideration. Your Executive would have announced this decision earlier, but the hotel at which our convention was to be held took the position that we must wait until two months before the planned start of our convention to determine if the convention could still be held, based on what was known at that date (May 20).
If you have already registered for the convention, for a full refund, please contact our Executive Secretary at info@rcna.ca or by phone at (647) 401-4014.
We are happy to say that our annual Convention Medal will still be available in Silver, Copper and Nickel in very limited mintages. If you are interested in purchasing a medal contact our Executive Secretary.
In addition, we are still in talks with our auction company to works out the details of an on-line only auction later this year. Further announcements will be made as they are confirmed.

Sad news. 2020 was the year with no fieldwork planned (was planned since 2017), I actually was going to take a motorcycle trip out east and attend my first RCNA...

There is a very distinct possibility that there may not be any in person
coin activity , ie shows for a very long time , possibly 2 to 3 years .

All year, I've been anticipating going to Halifax. Guess I'll have a very lazy summer.

It is too bad, but not unexpected given what is going on. I wasn't going to attend, but hopefully I will get to one of these at some point.

Where are you getting this information Pacificoin?

If this proves to be true, there would also be no bazaars, water parks, antique shows, lobster fests, amusement parks, theaters, concerts, casinos, graduation ceremonies, dances, farmer's markets, festivals and summer camps to just name a few, for the foreseeable future.

Hopefully this will not be the case as no hobby club or non profit association will be able to survive for very long under those circumstances. That said, under new restrictions limiting capacity and activities at meetings will only hasten the inevitable.

Meetings, annual shows and conventions as I'm sure everyone knows, offer collectors a valuable benefit that you don't get from surfing the internet or participating in an online auction/virtual bourse. Progress has been made in recent years to counteract the effect, which in my opinion is now in serious jeopardy coupled with the fact that most participants are advanced in age and no new younger (25-50 years) individuals are interested in joining.

It is no surprise that the RCNA convention has been cancelled. Organizers go above and beyond to put on a top notch show that will appeal to everyone, not to mention the amazing tours and special events. At least the auction will be moved to an online only format August 27-29.

There are going to be many things that will not be easily available in the near 2 year future, nor will many people be able to afford it when they DO become available. Every town, City, Province and the Federal government aren't getting their slice of HST either, so wait til you see your next property tax bill .. let alone pension plans from god knows how many companies.
