Hello.

One of my favorite coins in my cabinet is this 1938-D Walking Liberty half dollar:

I see many examples of this key date in mint state or in some quality grade of Very Fine; I assume these specimens were plucked out of circulation upon release, or a year or two after when the low mintage number became public knowledge.

How then did this one manage to survive in the wild so long and without getting discolored, bent, scratched? We'll never know, but I'm happy to have given it a home.

My ? is does this coin grade G-4 or G-6, and is it rare for the grade? The only other G-4-ish 1938-D I have seen for sale online are rather ugly compared to this one.

Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts.

G-4 in my book.

These things circulated for a long time and were still being pulled from circulation in the early 1960's.

My uncle (who got me started collecting in 1960) told me how he used to pull the best ones out of the cash register at the bowling alley he was working at. He would just toss the worn-out coins, including 38-D's, back in the register.

Maybe yours was one of the ones that he tossed back in the register!

G-4, that's the most worn 38-D I've seen.
