We have seen them on the forum before, numerous times. While we don't know exactly what they are or where/when they came from, we know that they're not a coin, and not all that old.

Agree.

Possibly it is imitating any number of coins from around 1600 with a crowned sovereign wearing a "Spanish" (ruffled) collar.

The mizzen ( rear ) mast on that ship is square-rigged. I think that around 1600 it should be lateen rigged on European vessels. Also, it appears flush decked instead of having a raised forecastle and quarter deck.

This causes me to suspect this illustration does not originate from that era but is too modern. My knowledge of this is sketchy, and I would appreciate more detail from any forum members.
