I am not sure that it is a DDO.

Granny23, I have found this on coins from all three mints. I believe this to be a worn master die issue and not a true doubled die. Charles or Bill will correct me if I'm wrong.

It is master die doubling. This happened much the same way that a working die becomes a doubled die. The master hub was offset during the second hubbing to the master die resulting in a doubled die.

Hi,

What BJ and MorgansRmine says, hit it on the head. If I had to take a stab at a number and Chuck may add to this. I would "guestimate" that 40% of all 1972 cents show this doubling. That's for P D and S coins. It is technically a doubled die but it has no value as it is almost as common as a normal 1972 cent.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill is about correct - no quantified study has ever been done to determine the exact proportion, but 40% is very plausible and cannot be far off of correct.

A true DDO is usually very popular and a wealth of info is available on it. That's one way to find out.

Technically this IS a doubled die...and a true one. Only issue is that it was the MASTER die that was doubled - in the same way that working dies are doubled. The difference is when the master die is doubled, it creates dozens of working hubs, which each create dozens of working dies. End of the day you have over a hundred dies with the same doubling. Common, not worth a premium, but STILL genuine doubled dies.

Thanks for the explainations. I know it's helped me, and I'm sure others are reading and learning also.
