It doesn't appear to be Machine Doubling at least to me.

It looks like split plating doubling.

The devices look normal in size, with some Machine Doubling.

Machine Doubling for sure. I don't really like those cents as they are almost always showing signs of MD.

Thus the reason I don't like Machine Doubling. It is a strike issue, not a die issue. Doubled dies are created on the die. Machine Doubling is a sloppy strike issue that can happen on a doubled die.

Makes sense. I don't like it either. Sure, I find it rather somewhat interesting when it's more severe, and not on these shield cents, but nevertheless, still don't like it. Simply gets in the way of finding actual errors and varieties.

When I look at the first 2 it seems to have separation of the end of the 2 at the top left and bottom left. I didn't thin MD could cause that sort of separation. Or is the camera just not picking up the shelf at those points?

Thanks for helping me learn.

@coop, Do you see any differences in how MD looks on coins struck on the horizontal-strike Schuler presses, as opposed to the old vertical-strike Bliss presses?

Denver switched to the Schuler presses in 2004-2005, depending on the denomination. IIRC, Philadelphia made the switch later.
