He guys, I stumbled across this 1911 $5 Indian, it is mounted(damaged) in a bezel and has a 14k chain too I am thinking of buying it as a gold play... But the reverse seems quite off to me. That said, the photograph of the coin is very small, maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. Any insight would be much appreciated.

The coin looks funky to me.

If you can test the coin, bezel and chain BEFORE buying it that would be best. Otherwise, I would pass.

I would only buy it if the gold tests good and you can get the deal below melt value.

Others may have a different opinion.

The obverse looks kind of okay to me. The reverse just looks wrong. Could be the lighting, but I have to think you can do better than this.

Remove the coin from the bezel, and and check for weight.
Should be XRF'ed for 90% Au.

Buy it at 14K for total weight. The coin is most probably damaged by the bezel mount. Best kept for jewelry.
If the coin is kept by itself, what would you do with the empty bezel?

Hard to tell from these photos. Can you post larger photos?

Are you buying this from a dealer, and if so, what kind of shop?

Pass - The coin may not be gold as the marks or lack of are not typical for gold.

I found the coin/chain on icollector, thus I have no way of weighing it or using my Sigma Metalytics Verifier Pro on it... Here is a link to the coin ->

https://www.icollector.com/Indian-H...in_i37347837

Oh and here is another gold coin that looks "wrong" to me, but not a big expert on $1 coins -> https://www.icollector.com/1853-Lib...in_i36849890

Auction results with search term "gold" applied -> https://www.icollector.com/ESTATE-A...ld&hi=0&vm=1

The auction group has other gold coins, most of which look legit, but I am not really interested in them anymore given the risk and potential time sink involved.
