NGC - Coin of the Day: On July 16, 1769, Father Junípero Serra founded California's first mission. Over the next few decades, it evolved into the city of San Diego, California. This California-Pacific Exposition Half Dollar celebrates San Diego, the host city of the 1935-36 expo. Read a detailed history of the California-Pacific Exposition Half Dollar.

If you're interested in original holders for classic US commemorative coins, have a look at one of my previous posts: Original California-Pacific International Exposition Coin Holder.

If you stand on the bridge in Balboa Park,
You can see most of the scene that is depicted on the coin.
Some extra building modifications and additions have been built since the time when this coin was struck.

Proof can be found with a Google Terrestrial Images,
if you place the camera at exactly the right place on the bridge.
I know; I have been there, and I have done the Google Images exercise as well.

Also have an example of the coin in MS-64.

I will leave it up to those who may be interested to repeat the Google Images exercise.

I lived in San Diego 2015-2019 and went to Balboa Park on many occasions. I cherished every moment living there. I wish I never left! I purchased this same commemorative half dollar a few weeks ago from a coin dealer ironically here in upstate New York.

Fun in that there was a "D" issue (1936) and an "S" issue (1935) but no "P". The 35's in particular exist in massive profusion due to several hoards of bag quantities. The "D" coins were struck from leftover, melted 35's.
