On the States quarters and the
ATB Quarters the doubled dies are confined to the central areas of the designs. On the outer edges of the obverse devices, that is die wear called
DDD.
Die Deterioration Doubling.
On the reverse the outer design devices in the ring area, are incuse devices. (The rules for incuse versus raised devices are just opposite) So the reverse ones are called
Machine Doubling on the incuse devices in that ring area. These are very common. About 70% of these devices have mild to hug doubling, but vary from strike to strike as they are not doubled dies. Just die movement during the strike, either before or after the strike, or both.
