Hello everyone. Aside from my introduction a month or so ago, this is my first post. Of all the times I was thinking of posting, it's pretty lame I managed to collect myself enough to learn to post here for this coin.. Quarters aren't usually my jam. But you never know it could be a good one.

Comparing this quarter of mine with the higher graded of the 2 in population according to PCGS, I'm about 75% sure I've got it. I'd try to be more confident if this weren't a quarter. A lot of the doubling I've seen in pictures always kinda look like Machine Doubling to me. But on this I'm seeing the actual staggering in the corners and stuff. So now you guys can help me judge it. If it is genuine, is this something worth sending in for grade? Or is the low population just because no one really cares? Anyway, thanks in advance for any help!

Better photos, full obverse and reverse, are welcome. May help us better determine what up with the coin.

What are you seeing that looks like doubling? I suggest using an actual reference site like wexler's die varieties or variety vista that will give explanations and close ups of the doubling rather than just comparing to the images on PCGS.

@CHJ, better pics would help as noted, but maybe you are talking about the right side of the letter Ts in STATES?

@Spence You got it. That's exactly it. And trust me, that's as good as my camera is gonna get. I compared it to a grade 43 (or 45) example on the HA website from when it sold back in 2012. Got to that from the PCGS Coin Facts app. I like that app. Let me know if any of you use other good apps. But anyway sorry to wander. But that is pretty much exactly how the graded one looks. Like MD IMO... I'd be more helpful with pics if I had more time. I'll try a little later though

The 1968-D has a strong Reverse DDR:

Note the side by side. You can see how much larger these devices are than normal. Also note the inside central areas how they reduce in size. I'll include more images of the doubling below:

Did you note the spread in the centers of these doubled dies? Also the notching on the corners of some of the devices. This is what to look for on a doubled die. Not just wide devices but the spread in the centers if the devices. On the grease filled devices, they will look larger because the tapered part of the devices are filled with grease, leaving the base of the devices look flat and short looking. But on the DDR, did you note that these devices are overall wider? That is what to look for on a doubled die. The spread line in the centers of the devices. This one shows it everywhere.

Thanks coop. I mentioned in the original post what I called staggering to describe notching. Which this does have. It's a pretty worn out old coin, so I just assumed that was making it less pronounced. In person the letter A's even have 2 points. This quarter is a 66 though. Not sure if you just posted the 68 for reference or not. But they are very similar. 66s that I've seen are just less pronounced. Thanks for the detailed response.

Ps: @coop, are you CoinOp from YouTube?

You can learn a lot from coop. If you are dead set on sending it in to be graded, go for it! It's a great learning experience in itself.

In future posts, please include photos of both sides of your coin, with close-ups of areas in question. Yes, taking photos of coins isn't easy, but the more you do of it, the easier/better it gets. I too use my phone for uploading photos here... all phone makers are different, but they are easy and convenient. Play around with yours and experiment with capturing details you want to share with us. We hope to see more of your coins soon!
