At least that's what I'm assuming it is. Might one of our hammered experts be able to provide a positive I.D for this? 14-15mm diameter. Many thanks.

I can read enough of the inscriptions that it looks like one of the Edwards to me, and minted in London. I think that there are trefoils rather than groups of three separate pellets on the rev, which means this link is one possibility: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces162443.html

Thanks Spence. Yes, you're right, it's definitely an Ed, and the trefoils on the reverse do indeed match those in the linked image, but the obverse portrait and legend lettering doesn't. I don't know enough about these to be able to pin it down.

Ok well perhaps together we can figure out the legends and then I look in my Spink for a match. For the obv, I see + EDWARDVS _____ and on the rev I see something close to LON DON CIVI TAS. Can you correct this or help fill in the blanks with the coin in hand?

Agreed on both counts, so, most likely an Ed IV? Thanks again S, I'm most grateful. I'll see if I can find a match in this issue for the portrait.

@hogarth, as I dig into this a little deeper, I'm now leaning toward Edward III. This is for a few reasons: first, the cross at the start of the obv legend and second, the thickness of the bust. Perhaps Spink #1558? Hopefully some folks who know more will weigh in on this. If not, then I could move this thread over to the medieval section of CCF and we can get some of their eyes on it.

Thank you again Spence. They're certainly similar, aren't they. Looking at the 1558 in Spink one thing I do note is the portrait in that image is longer and much thinner.
I had no idea there is a medieval section on this forum. There are a few other hammered coins I have here which fall outside my area of expertise. Maybe I should investigate.

The difference between Spink 1557 and 1558 is that 58 is EDWARDVS REX An. I agree this is Spink 1557.
