I've always had a really hard time seeing the difference between SMS coins and business strikes, so it's something I've chosen to largely ignore in the past. However, this DDO I just cherrypicked from my dad's collection is a tough one to attribute, and the fact that I don't know if it's an SMS or business strike is just making it impossible. Can anyone weigh in on which it is so I at least know which varieties to compare it against?

Lol @John1
Thanks guys! What do you look for to determine SMS vs. Business strike? I hear "satin finish" a lot, but I just can't tell the difference in the PCGS pictures...

I compared the little bit of doubling you show on your half with the CONECA listed 37 DDO's in my collection, and the only thing that came close was the 66 BS DDO-003. You could confirm the -003 by using the die scratch markers behind the head in the field, see attached photos.

Thanks, atrox, I was having some trouble placing it too, but I believe it is DDO-014. The 003 is close, but mine has some notching on the second 6 in the date that doesn't match up with 003.

I also looked close at the 66 BS DDO-014, but noticed too many things that didn't quite match your half, but the DDO-003 did. 1 - The north-south short hair strand behind the ear of the DDO-014 has very strong doubling, none on the DDO-003 or your half. Most of the hair behind the head on the -014 is doubled and not on the -003 or your half. 2 - The doubling on the bottom of the chin and down the neck is a medium spread on the -014, but on your half and the -003 it is a very light spread under the chin and no spread on the neck. 3 - I think the doubling on the eye for the -014 is very weak compared to your half and the -003. Can you see any evidence of the die scratch markers from the DDO-003?

@Atrox nope, no die scratch. I've been unable to find any die markers to match it with the varieties listed on VV...

Wexler has three listing for doubled working hub issues that year: http://doubleddie.com/1141429.htmlQuote: Significant changes have been made to the 1966 Kennedy half dollar obverse doubled die listings due to the discovery of three different obverse doubled working hubs. The reassignment of numerous 1966 Kennedy half dollar obverse doubled die listings as being from the obverse doubled working hubs left huge "holes" in the obverse doubled die listings for this date. As an example, there were once 37 listings for the 1966 obverse doubled dies. Now there are just 12 working dies and the three working hubs. Many listings were assigned new numbers in order to fill the gaping holes in the listings. Notations of these changes are made for each of the affected varieties.
