Hello again!

Second time checking with all you experts. I think I may have a 1974 D Washington quarter with Wexler's Master Hub Doubling on the reverse.

Here are photos:

1974-D-25c---LDS,-PMD,-Or-Wmhr-001-?

1974-D-25c---LDS,-PMD,-Or-Wmhr-001-?

Here's a shot highlighting what I think are signs of doubling or LDS/PMD. Red arrows point to what I think may be a sign of LDS, green arrows point to what I think may be signs of legitimate doubling:

1974-D-25c---LDS,-PMD,-Or-Wmhr-001-?

So, am I on to something here? Or is this another red-herring?

Thanks for the help, and thanks for keeping this forum such a negativity-free oasis in the internet "desert of angst" ;)

As long as only one master hub was used to create dies in a given year, a doubled working hub would show on all coins for the year.

Looking at VV's list, there's only one design variety known on 1974-D quarters, so only one master hub, so all 1974-D quarters would have this doubling.

The master hub is used to make master dies, which is used to make working hubs, which is used to make working dies, which is used to make coins.

Well shucks. Every post I make here is a quick lesson. Thanks. I guess this info reinforces the reason that *true* Doubled Dies are so coveted ... they're rare.

But wait... Since I'm a silver-lining kind of person - I guess this means I have *technically* identified a "real" doubling. YAY! I've graduated up from posting pictures of LDS!

I'll keep hunting :)

1974-D 25¢ WMHR-001 Master Hub Doubling

Description: A spread towards the center shows on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath with all doubling decreasing in spread from left to right.
Die Markers: Obverse: Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected. Reverse: The leave directly to the left of the arrowheads is pointed at the top. Die markers will vary on the individual working dies affected.

Cross References: CONECA: SD-1-R-II-C+VI
Comments: Because this was a master hub it was intended to be used over a period of several years. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1974 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the second doubled master hub that leave is rounded at the top.

That is his only listing for that year/mint/reverse.
