I just thought I would break the string of ancient posts

I had been on the lookout for a nice coin with this iconography of St. Paul holding a sword (related to his pre-Christian vocation) and book, and succeeded with a bid on this undated giulio from the Papal States, reign of Pope Paul IV 1555-58, reverse shown first. Something is odd about how the coin was struck. The lower part of the obverse looks like it was double struck with the second strike rotated clockwise a bit, so that the second S is PAVLVS shows twice, and the lower part of the Papal shield is rotated so that it obscures the P in PONT MAX. Doesn;t make sense to me how this could happen, but this is what I see

Next, this undated grosso of the Republic of Florence that can be dated to 1482 from the mintmaster's mark at about 11:00 reverse. MIR 62/42. I like that this coin has the same devices as the more famous gold florin: the ornate lily obverse, and St John the Baptist reverse (I wish the condition were a bit better). @spence has helped me with a list of mintmaster's marks for these types, so I can work on some missing 15th century dates in my OFEY series.

Lovely coins, it looks like the coin moved slight it when being struck causing the off center strike.

Thanks! Very strange about that Bertolami auction was that these coins were shipped from the UK, so they did not require the normal "export license" under Italian antiquities law, and arrived promptly after the auction.
Just about the only thing that showed up faster than I expected in the last 3 months!
