A co worker came to me this morning with a 2000-P Lincoln Penny she had received as change. It appears to be gold in color, very similar to the color of a Sac. dollar. I have not seen one of these before and thought it may be a coin from the QVC network or some other agency that offers these highly collectable coins that are worth nothing more than their face value at some ridicules price. I don't think the mint would have released this because I would have read about here a long time ago. Has anyone else seen one of these in circulation? I told her to hang on to it just because it is something different, it may be collectable and I would share any information I get here with. Thanks

Without seeing it, I would guess that it is brass plated. Post 1982 cents are composed of zinc planchets that are copper plated. When some of the zinc planchets get "lost" in the copper bath, they slowly dissolve diluting the copper into brass.

I will start by saying I'm not sure what you have, but kind of feel you may have found one of the many cents that my grandson has been gold plating. He has a new electrical machine that he uses in his business of gold plating auto trim to match other gold colors already on the car. It's fast and fairly cheap. He has been using cents to practice his plating skills. Don't know how many he has plated but it has been a bunch. So you never know, what you have found. Good luck on it being a real "gold" coin.

I've found several gold plated cents and dimes, and probably ten gold plated State Quarters (and what I think is a platinum plated CA quarter). Funny, no gold plated nickels- they've gotta be out there but none of them have found their way to me yet! I hang onto them because they look different, and also to keep someone else from getting ahold of them and thinking they have something rare and valuable. Rachel [:p]

Thank you all for responding. Dan, Do you suppose she found one of your grandsons gold plated pennies here at West Point, NY?

I rather doubt it shooter, but it's always a possibility. I don't think my grandson is the only person making gold coins for either practice or just for the fun of it. Have to tell him to whip me out a nickel so I can send it to Rachel for her collection.

Cool! I'd be honored to have one of your grandson's gold plated nickels in my collection. It's just strange that I've never found one what with all the other gold plated coinage I've seen at the bank. Rachel [:p]
