I just bought a huge stash of Lincoln Wheat cents. I checked the PCGS site to confirm with dates/mint marks I should look for and saw where the 1941 brown is worth considerably more than the 1941 red. Is this true? If so, why?

If it is true, it's the only one in the entire series where the brown is worth more than the red. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I hope it is true, since there are no less than 50 of these 1941 browns now in my possession!!!

Thanks.

Hi volfan

after reading your post I went and looked at the PCGS guide,, it certianly says what you said it does, but I can guarantee you that it is a mistake, with a mintage of 887,018,000 it is anything but rare.

Should we notify PCGS of this?

Im going to give it a couple of days myself, it is more than likely that has already taken place, by someone much more involved with PCGS than me ,, which is 0 involvement !!

I seldom look at their price guide, is it extremely high and unreliable in my opinion.

I use other sources as a guide on my cents,,

and others .

Regarding 1941 cents - they are common in all grades in brown and red brown, and only begin to become "of value" in grades exceeding 65 in red.

Regarding all Lincoln cents...there is no such thing as any of them being more valuable in brown than in red. Having any date/mint or die variety or error is ALWAYS far more desirable in red, thus more expensive.

I too have never heard of one being worth more in brown. However, I sometimes find the brown ones to have superior aesthetic appeal. My sentimental favorite of all my Lincoln cents is a 1910 brown uncirculated (approx. MS-63 to MS-65; I don't really care about the fine distinctions in MS grades; I'll leave that to the investors). It's a common coin which I only paid about $10-20 for, but it is absolutely gorgeous. The mint luster is perfect, and it seems to shine through the even brown toning with occasional iridescent flashes. Although this coin is far less valuable, I like it better than my EF 1909S-VDB or my red uncirculated 1931S.
