This Community is great!

I found a 1958 D Wheat penny With "Backwards" One. Did a search and found this thread http://goccf.com/t/197666

Seems like there are a few...

Mine appears to have a double "9" and "5" any thoughts?

That is a die chip. We often hear that term. But what does it mean? A piece breaks off the die, leaving a void. Now when the next coin is struck that void on the die is filled with the new cents material. This creates a raised area on the cent. But this void can continue to break away more and more as the die is continuing to be used. Thus that void is now a raised area on the coins struck by that die.

They are common.

Yes a die chip plus a little circulation wear, but still that is kinda fun since it really resembles a backwards number one.

Added: the number 5 may have a little Machine Doubling.

This particular die also shows a crack/channel from the bottom left corner of the MM to Lincoln's vest which your pic shows.

If the area from the mintmark to the jacket is raised, it maybe a die gouge/small dent. If it is incuse, then it maybe coin damage. Just can't see which it is from the images provided.

Thank you Coop - I do have a lot of coins with those types of errors (filled in "B" in Liberty or "BIE")

Thank you Centsation - I hadn't noticed the crack/channel from the bottom left corner of the MM to Lincoln's vest. It is faint, but it is there.

The fill 'B' is a similar cause, but also different. On the dies to form the centers of closed devices, it has a pin to form the center of the closed device. When this post breaks off or even breaks below the devices, the filled area can be shallow or even taller than the device if the lowest part of the post breaks deeper into the die:
Breaking:

Broken level with the devices:

Broken below the devices (Now taller than the devices)

So my next question is: "Why doesn't this happen to the 6 & 9 On Lincoln cents?" On this series all the 6 & 9's are not closed. The are all open on one end of these digits on the Lincoln cents. Other Denominations they are closed. Just Lincoln Cents are not. Something new to you today?

Also look at how IGWT is stretching towards the rim. This die was aging fast.
