OK....just throwin this out there as an interesting feature of this Merc. Look at pictures (sorry for pic overload). A 'D' Mint, but along side of it, looks like an 'S' mint mark impression.

Yes...crazy toning on this lady, but in-hand it is strangely attractive. Pics no help in that department. Though most will think it's Fugly. But here for MM question, not Merc beauty contest. Lol. Nice Bonnet Die crack noted.

My question is, is this really there as a result of maybe a Die that was sent from the San Francisco Mint, to Denver Mint, and reworked to be a Denver Mint Die? Seems possible. And the 'S' mint mark did not get completely removed and we see what we see here?

But, I would think it would be on many other 1940-D coins as well. Maybe it is, but the Tone brought it out on this one?

Anyway....just an interesting find and thought some Mint Mark savvy folks could pontificate on whether it is anything at all. Probably not, but worth the look I think. Coins always have crazy mysteries from time to time. Maybe this is one of them. Maybe I need to see someone? :-) Check pictures and see what you think.

I think it is just an anomaly in the toning.

1940-D no S. You're seeing something that isn't there or is wishful thinking. Very unattractive obverse.

Agreed, just a D. That spot your seeing is not raised, striations from die polishing carry right through it.

Haha....yea. Just figured I'd ask. Toning? She is a bit ugly I will admit. To some? Fugly! But again....in-hand, as you see bits of shininess here and there, it is actually shiny toning all over. Just blotchy brown/copper but in different lights, multi colors. Reverse has some pretty multis as well. Just a cool Merc I picked up for a few Washington's because she is unique, albeit probably needs a Merc Face job. I guess that would be called a Metal Surgery? Can't be Plastic Surgery. Meh

Gotta have some fun with this great hobby.

Ty2020b...nice observation. In my second career after chasing terroristas in my first, striations are a huge factor in aircraft accident investigation. They tell quite a bit of the story in what happened and certain conditions the aircraft was in at impact. Literally the striations here do in fact show that for the MM as you noted. I did notice that right off and was wondering if it would be pointed out. Kudo's. Though I am sure all others here picked up on that but did not articulate it like you did. Ok...

Anyway....100% expected responses. Love Merc's. They come in crazy conditions at times. BUT.....in the event there was something to it...that is why I asked you folks. As always.....brutally honest with a smattering of encouragement. Haha. That is how I describe CC to other coin folks I meet, and tell them about you guys. You want a answer with no fluff on your coins condition, anomolies, etc.? Come to CCF.

Onward!!.......
